Breaking The System
As a student, I cannot help but notice certain things in the school system that I would like changed. I do realize that there is no such thing as a system that is perfect or completely agreed upon, but there's no harm in trying something new. The one thing that really bothers me in the school system is curriculum requirements. On my school board's webpage, they describe their main goal for the school system: "ensures equality of opportunity for each student in a safe and healthy learning environment that prepares all students to be capable, responsible, and self-reliant citizens in the global society." Sounds wonderful, but there are different ways of achieving this. One thing they're having students do in school is take certain "required" core classes each and every year until they graduate high school. These include English, Science, Math, and Social Studies/History. By having these as required classes, students are able to have a basic understanding in each subject. This also allows students to find out what they're strengths and weaknesses are. If a student seems to excel in a certain class over the others, my school offers more rigorous classes for any of the core classes that the student may take to challenge themselves and have a deeper understanding. This is all well and good, but my main concern of my school's goal is the part about being prepared for the global society. I read that as an adult that is actively participating in the world around them. To me, this means that you have not just a job, but a career that you worked to go into and are informing yourself on the happenings of the world around you. To help students be prepared for the "real world", the system needs to change. The system needs to put more focus on career paths for students. The way the system is currently set, it seems people expect many students to have no idea of what career they may be interested in. Yes, there are students who do not know yet what they want to do, but there are students who know one or more things they want to do. I, for example, know that I am interested in going into the medical field. So my proposal is to change curriculum requirements. For the students that know what career they want to pursue, allow them to take only the classes that are needed for that career. For me, that would be focusing heavily on math and sciences. Then, for the students that do not know which career they want, they can continue taking the core classes. This would allow students to start preparing for their futures as soon as possible. And I know for me, if I can complete at least one or two years of college classes in high school, that would be appreciated. It would help cut down the amount of time, the amount of my life I am in school. This is what I think when I hear about the school wanting us as students to prepared for adulthood.
